For optimal paver installation, we recommend using C-33 concrete sand or #89 washed stone as your bedding layer material. These options drain better and help to wick away moisture more efficiently than older industry standards like crushed stone screenings or decomposed granite. C-33 concrete sand is the preferred bedding layer according to the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) when using a traditional compacted base. #89 washed stone is the recommended bedding layer for open-graded base installations. Once the proper base and bedding layer are set and the pavers are laid, we recommend using a high-quality polymeric sand (available in-store) to fill the paver joints for long-term durability. Contact our team for expert advice on your paver project.
The best base for paver installations depends on the project requirements and drainage needs. We recommend the following options:
- ABC Base Gravel- a traditional compacted base material, best used with C-33 concrete sand as the bedding layer.
- #57 and #67 Washed Stone- ideal for open-graded base installations, these materials allow for better drainage and are recommended for areas with excess water or poor soil drainage.
If water drainage is a top priority, #57 and #67 washed stones are excellent choices as they help prevent water buildup beneath the pavers. Need clarification on ASTM stone gradations? Contact your Markham Sales Representative for expert guidance!
Yes, we recommend sealing natural stone to protect your investment and enhance its longevity. Sealing natural stone offers several key benefits:
- Protection Against Stains - Sealing prevents organics, oil, and other substances from penetrating a porous natural stone, reducing the risk of staining.
- Enhanced Durability - A quality sealer helps prevent erosion, weathering, and surface wear, extending the lifespan of your stone.
- Moisture Resistance - Sealed stone is less likely to absorb moisture, which helps prevent cracking, spalling, and freeze-thaw damage.
- Easier Maintenance - A sealed surface is much easier to clean and maintain, requiring less effort to keep it looking great.
- Color Enhancement - Certain sealers can enrich the stone’s natural colors, giving it a more vibrant and polished appearance.

Yes, sealing concrete pavers is highly recommended to enhance their durability, appearance, and longevity. Here are the key benefits of sealing your pavers:
- Protect Against Stains & Discoloration - sealing creates a protective barrier that helps prevent stains from oil, grease, dirt, and organic debris.
- Enhanced Color & Appearance - A quality sealer can enrich the natural color of pavers, giving them a more vibrant or wet-look finish.
- Prevents Organic Growth & Efflorescence - Sealing helps reduce the growth of moss and organics between pavers while minimizing the appearance of efflorescence (white chalky residue).
- Increases Resistance to Weathering - Sealed pavers are more resistant to rain, uv exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles, reducing the risk of cracking or fading over time.
- Simplifies Maintenance & Cleaning - A sealed surface repels water, dirt, and grime, making it easier to clean and maintain the pavers.
For the best protection, choose a high-quality sealer suited to your paver type and desired finish. Contact us today to explore our premium paver sealers and get expert recommendations for your project!
The white, powdery residue on your pavers is called efflorescence. This is a naturally occurring process where salts within the pavers or stone rise to the surface during the curing phase. Efflorescence is harmless and will gradually fade over time as the pavers continue to breathe post install.
If excessive efflorescence has built up, we offer efflorescence cleaners to help remove it. Additionally, we recommend allowing new installations a few months to breathe before cleaning and applying any sealers- this prevents trapping the efflorescence on the surface of the paver with the sealer.
The main difference between our Organic Planting Mix and Topsoil lies in their composition and best uses:
Organic Planting Mix - a nutrient- rich, airy blend made from pine fines, perlite, peat moss, and poultry litter. This mix is ideal for amending soil, planting fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and improving soil drainage and aeration.
Piedmont Screened Topsoil - A blend of sand, clay, wood, and leaf waste, making it versatile for planting, top-dressing turf, and amending garden beds. This mix provides structure and nutrients for general landscaping and lawn improvement.

Natural stone products are not man-made, so color variation is to be expected. Unlike manufactured materials, natural stone is formed over time by geological processes, resulting in unique patterns, tones, and textures. This natural variegation is part of the beauty and timeless appeal of stone, making each project one of a kind.
Factors that can influence color variation include:
- Quarry location - stones from different regions may have distinct color differences.
- Mineral Composition - Variations in minerals can create a range of hues and patterns.
- Weathering & Exposure - some stones may subtly change in appearance over time when exposed to the elements.
When selecting natural stone, we recommend viewing it in person, and taking into consideration the full pallet to get a sense of the overall color range. If you have questions about specific stone selections, our team is happy to help!
Natural stone can be processed in various ways to achieve different textures, aesthetics, and functional benefits. Here are some of the most common stone finishes:
Sawn & Sandblasted - The stone is first sawn-cut, then blasted with sand or other abrasives to create a grippy but smooth, textured surface. This enhances slip resistance, and gives an aesthetically desirable finish, making it great for outdoor applications.
Split Face - a rough, natural-looking texture created by splitting the stone along its natural grain. Commonly used for walls, veneers, and accents to add depth and dimension.
Honed - A smooth, matte finish with minimal reflection, achieved by grinding and sanding the stone surface. Ideal for interior floors, countertops, and wall applications.
Polished - A highly reflective, glossy finish that enhances the color and veining of the stone. Popular for countertops, floors, and decorative applications.
Thermal (Flamed) - Created by exposing the stone to extreme heat, which causes a textured, slightly rough, crisped surface. This finish improves slip resistance, making it a top choice for patios, walkways, and pool decks. It is most commonly seen with Bluestone products or natural stone that shows undesirable saw blade marks when cut down to size.
Natural Cleft - This finish retains the stone’s natural surface texture, resulting in an organic, rustic appearance. Often seen in flagstone, slate, and other sedimentary stones.
Tumbled - Stones are placed in a tumbling machine with sand and water to create a weathered, aged appearance with softened edges. Frequently used in pavers, cobblestones, and some wall veneers.
Leathered - A textured finish created by brushing the stone to retain some of its natural roughness while adding a slight satin sheen. Popular for countertops, accent walls, and flooring due to its tactile appeal.
Each finish provides a unique look and function, so choosing the right one depends on your project’s aesthetic goals, durability needs, and application type.
Yes, red clay can cause stubborn stains on porous natural stone and concrete pavers. Because clay contains iron oxides, it can seep into the pores of the material, leaving behind a reddish stain that can be difficult to remove if left for too long.
How to Prevent Clay Stains:
Avoid prolonged exposure - Try to keep clay from sitting on your stone or pavers for extended periods.
Seal your stone or pavers - A quality sealer can help reduce the stone’s porosity, creating a protective film and making it easier to clean.
Rinse off clay deposits quickly - Regular maintenance and prompt cleaning can prevent deep staining. The use of protective covering can be used during construction phases to help keep red clay off of the surface of already installed flooring.
Yes, it is highly recommended to blend pavers or natural stone pieces from different parts of the pallet to ensure even color distribution. Since pavers and natural stone can have slight variations in color due to differences in pigmentation and manufacturing processes, blending helps prevent noticeable patches of contrasting shades.
Best Practices for Blending Pavers:
Pull from multiple pallets (if applicable) - If your project requires more than one pallet, pull pavers evenly from each.
Mix from different layers - Work from different sections of the pallet instead of installing using one layer at a time.
Lay out before installing - Dry-lay a section to check for any stark color differences before final placement.
Taking these steps will create a more natural, visually appealing finish while preventing harsh color transitions.
Yes, compacting your concrete pavers is an important step in the installation process to ensure proper interlock, stability, and longevity. Using a vibratory plate compactor or roller compactor helps set the pacers into the bedding layer and ensures even leveling.
Important Considerations for Compacting Pavers:
Use a Urethane Mat for Embossed or Textured Pavers - Pavers with textured or embossed surfaces (high and low points) are more susceptible to scuff marks. A urethane mat between the compactor and the paver surface will help to prevent surface damage during compacting. -
Check Large Slabs Before Compacting - If you’re unsure whether our pavers or slabs can handle compaction, contact a Markham sales representative for guidance. Some slabs with a larger aspect ratio may be damaged when used with the wrong type of compactor.
If you’re unsure whether your pavers or slabs can handle compaction, contact your Markham representative.
Proper compaction ensures a durable, long-lasting paver installation and helps prevent shifting or settling over time.
No, polymeric haze will not damage your pavers or affect the integrity of your installation. Polymeric haze occurs when polymeric jointing sand is not fully removed from the surface before being activated with water. While it may leave a slight white film on the pavers, this is purely cosmetic and will naturally fade over time with rain and weathering.
How to Handle Polymeric Haze:
Prevention - Always ensure excess sand is thoroughly swept or blown off the surface before wetting to activate the polymeric binding agents.
Natural removal - Haze will gradually disappear on its own with rain, exposure, and traffic.
Specialized Cleaners - If you want faster removal, we offer cleaner specifically designed for polymeric haze.
